Leiden has a lively shopping and entertainment centre The old city centre of Leiden boasts a wide variety of shops. Moreover, every Wednesday and Saturday there is a general market along the banks of the Rhine. This market has been in existence for 9 centuries. Leiden's culinair aspect is reflected in the variety of restaurants and bars on offer. The Leiden Jazzweek in January and the celebration of the Relief of the Siege on 2 and 3 October are but two of the many events that take place throughout the year. (for leiden events click here)

Shopping
Leiden has a lot to offer when it comes to shopping, The most famous shopping street is the Haarlemmerstraat, which is more than a kilometre in length. The Haarlemmerstraat has a lot to offer, from boutiques to big clothing stores, but there are also more authentic shops. Saturday is the busiest day of the week, thousands of peoples from Leiden and the surrounding area go shopping then (In Leiden we say: "d'stad in", it means: "we go shopping". Another big shopping street is the Breestraat, the street where the city hall stands. Here you'll find the more expensive shops.

Market
Leiden has been a market town for over 9 centuries, visited by people from all around. Nowadays there is a big market along the banks of the Rine (the New Rhine) each Wednesday and Saturday. For Leiden has no general market square; since all wares were brought in by boats the riverbanks where the logical place to sell them. Here you can buy everything, vegetables, fruit, clothes, jewellery and much more.
